Naxos Guide update

Right on time, just before the holiday season 2016 we updated our iphone Naxos guide application.
We added all our hotels, apartments and studios on Naxos including all information, facilities, pictures and of course location and a routing feature. Thus now you have a complete overview of all our accommodations on Naxos.

As many years now, we offer a wide range of accommodations. Starting with economic studios directly at Plaka beach like Sea Melody, which offers spaceous studios starting at 35 euro.

In addition a very good deal is Acti Plaka again directly at Plaka beach. With studios for 2, 3 and 4 persons as well as apartments for up to 5 persons Acti Plaka can offer you the accommodation you are looking for. At Acti Plaka you have the option to order breakfast and since last season you can also rent a car directly from the family running the accommodation.

It is already almost a year since our last post on the blog! Amazing how time flies and we never realise it. Apparently during this year a lot of things have happened to all of us, some got married, some died, some won the lottery jack pot, some traveled - but this would be the subject of a different post. :-) :-)

This last summer in particular Naxos proved to be a very popular destination among Europeans, despite the crisis the country faced in July. What is also very promising is that the season was extended until September and even in October tourists kept arriving to the sunny island.

What is exciting for us is that since our last communication

1. We upgraded the design and the content of the website, in order to make it more user friendly, clearer and brighter! Moreover, we introduced for most of the accommodations a calendar where you can immediately see the availability of rooms, studios and apartments (this of course is a work in progress). And no, it has nothing to do with "scary booking", practiced by many providers of tourist or transport services worldwide. We don't -and never will- show small windows with information like “20 people are looking at your accommodation at this very moment” or “we only have one studio left, which will possibly be booked the next 3 minutes”. 
   We just show you the real and simple information, available or booked. 
   
   
2. We developed partnerships with new luxurious accommodations! Take a look:

A brand new group of private luxus villas located in Agios Arsenios just some minutes from Naxos town (Chora). Each villa for up to 4 persons is fully equipped and has a private swimming pool.

Picking up from where we left, we are happy to introduce to you our new partner, Hotel Francesca.

Hotel Francesca is at just 60 meters from the beach of Agios Prokopios, in a quiet area. The hotel offers rooms for 2, studios for up to 4 and spacious apartments for up to 5 persons, equipped with all amenities you expect in a hotel (such as WiFi, TV, hair dryer, safe, etc.). In addition they have free parking and a children's playground. Free breakfast is included in the room rate (if you book a studio or an apartment breakfast is charged an extra 5 euro per person).

However, most important of all, your hosts want to provide a family atmosphere in their hotel and make you feel really at home.

The advantage when booking a hotel at Agios Prokopios is that all facilities are in a walking distance (super markets, restaurants or bars, bus stop, pharmacy) as well as our scuba diving partner and one of our rent a car partners. As a Naxos guide, it provides the useful info on how to come to Naxos, where to stay, where to eat and what to do and see - all info available with maps and routing, so a very handy tool when you are on the spot and need to find your way across the biggest island of the Cyclades.

A series of photos reveal the beauties of the places we recommend and you can have direct access to important service providers, such as ferries, rent-a-car, restaurants, activities and first aid.

And a whole section devoted to Athens, the new - old European hot spot for city travelers! What else would you want?

Testing our new Naxos Apartments / guide application

Well, we are vigorously going on developing our naxos-apartments smartphone application!

The application, like our website, provides access to booking with one of our partners on the island and offers a variety of tourist information on how to access Naxos, what to do and what to see on the island.

All accommodation, rent a car, attractions etc are accompanied with text and photos and most importantly are tagged on google maps so you can find your way when on the island.

In addition we have an RSS feed to this very blog so you will always get the latest news on offers, events, activities and whatever!

Long time no see! All this time, we have been busy redesigning our website, updating useful travel information on how to reach Naxos via Athens, Santorini or even Myconos and last, but not least, enriching the variety of accommodation we offer you. Plus working on an iPhone application which will facilitate your travel and your stay on the island - we'll keep you posted on this promising project.

To get back to "what's up" with Naxos Apartments, we always have as our priority your satisfaction. • Villa Harmony, at 50 meters from Plaka beach, offers studios and apartments for up to 4 persons with prices ranging accordingly from 32 to 110 €. Some of the studios and apartments have a great sea view and the hotel also offers a swimming pool and a cosy pool bar. Here also children up to 3 years old can stay FREE OF CHARGE

What's more, we have a couple of interesting news on our existing partners:

• Sea Melody (Plaka) has a special offer for this June: instead of 36 €, they offer their studio for 2 persons at 30 €
• Valena Mare (Plaka) is at the moment constructing a swimming pool at the premises, so come spring you can enjoy your refreshments by the pool bar or host your own personal barbecue! Soon we will upload photos of the swimming pool area. And don't forget, the beach is at 2 minutes walking distance and they offer for free sunbeds and beach towels. Good news!

At 21-22 degrees Celcius today, on a sunny spring day, one can only be positive and think of good news!! So, here we go:

1. Our guests can benefit of a 15% discount in car or motorbike rentals in May, June and September when they book with our partners on the island. Remember, Naxos is the biggest island of the Cyclades and in addition to the majestic beaches, it offers visitors a variety of landscapes and picturesque villages as well as a rich cultural heritage with ancient and medieval monuments. Therefore, to fully grasp the beauty of the island (especially when everything is blossoming in spring), no matter at which of our partner hotels you stay, we strongly recommend you to rent a car or a motorbike for at least some days of your holidays.
2. Plaka Watersports offers our guests a discount of 10% in May, June and September in any of the watersports or other activities  they provide (biking, horse riding etc). Remember,  the Cyclades are famous for the wind "meltemi", a strong, steady northern wind and Naxos is a hot spot for windsurfing or kitesurfing (check our post in 2011). Apparently, our partner hotels on Agia Anna and Plaka beach  provide an easier access to Plaka Watersports
3. There are still some vacant seats for Olympic Air flights Athens - Naxos during summer. As many of you know, the aircraft is very small, so if you consider the option of flying (30 minutes) instead of taking a ferry, (5 hours), book quickly. Besides, high speed ferries have not yet published their itinerary - Blue Star is as every year sailing to Naxos twice daily, at 07.25 and at 17.30  
4. If you fly to Santorini on the way to Naxos or if you simply want to visit this volcanic island, we can help with your hotel accommodation there and give you the opportunity to book a studio or apartment at the Ambelia Traditional Villas in Finikia, at 15 walking minutes from Oia. And in this case, you will experience 2013 Year of Gastronomy  in Santorini!
5. Which hotel is best for me on Naxos island?

This was approximately the title of a page I stumbled upon on..stumbleupon.com: a user had posted the results of hotels on Naxos from an on line booking site and was asking for "help! which hotel is best".

Well, with us, Naxos Apartments, you will not need to resolve to such measures! Our site presents a variety of tourist accommodation, from 5 stars' hotels to villas, to apartments and studios by the seaside or further inland, with/without pool and other amenities.

We personally know the proprietors of the hotels we represent, often the photos we show we shot ourselves and since we have published the site, we have spent holiday time at most of them. So, yes, we know exactly if a family of 3 can stay in a studio at Sea Melody (yes, they can), exactly how rich a Greek breakfast is at Maria Studios (very!), which are the apartments with sea view at Evi Plaka Studios (spoiler alert!), how spacious is the bathroom at Valena Mare, we know if you will need a car at the hotel of your choice and so on and so forth.

PS1. Olympic Airways published their flight schedule in November (98 euros Athens to Naxos, 80 euros Naxos to Athens). Book well in advance, because the planes are small. 

PS2. Ferries' schedules (Piraeus - Naxos) are not yet available, but experience tells us that there will be at least 2 Blue Star ferries departing daily, one around 07.00 and one around 17.00. The High Speed ferries also depart around 07.00-07.30 in the mornings and around 17.00 in the afternoons, but last summer 2012  were not sailing daily. We shall have to wait until Easter I guess before we find out their exact schedules, and will let you know, but the above can serve as a guideline when booking your flight to Athens.

I came back from Naxos for a few days and I am still not sure where to start from! I have hundreds of new photos to show you, I have new shops and activities to recommend, I have secret tips to share with you.

At the moment, I can only say that Naxos in May and in June is another world, the nature is blossoming, the air is still fresh in the evenings and most beaches are empty - their crystal waters take you to heaven. Bourgos Studios right next to the venetian castle in Naxos Town (Chora). Ideal for those who want to be in the center of the islands' life, near the museums, the shops, the restaurants and the night life. You can still walk to the beach (at 15 min. walk you can reach Agios Georgios popular beach) and of course you can take any bus or rent a car to explore the magic corners of the whole island. Note for those staying in or visiting the castle in general, 3G network is not always available and Vodafone GR does not really have a good signal in the castle.

Simos Studios are located near the Agios Georgios beach (actually, at only 150 meters from the beach). Recommended for those who want to take a morning swim, before setting off to explore the rest of the islands' beaches, coves, monuments and mountainous villages. In the evening you can walk to Naxos Town (Chora), or dine by the seaside.

The same applies for Villa Naxia, located at 60 meters from Agios Georgios beach. Villa Naxia provides studios for up to 3 persons and Apartments for up to 5 persons.

July vacation

Yes, I know, it is now mid August and most of you are laying at a beach somewhere - and most of you are in overcrowded beaches, walking in overcrowded pebbled streets, eating in overcrowded restaurants with stressed waiters. That is why I love July or September on the Greek islands, especially the picturesque cycladic island of Naxos. I love it in July because the days are really long and in September because the seas are really calm and very warm. Prices are lower, service is always better, and everyone is more relaxed.

Even more so when you rent a studio somewhere quiet. Some of my clients stayed this July at Stafilas studios in Agia Anna, in an apartment on the ground floor by the pool, and although they feared it would be loud with children, it was serene.
This is a family business, run by Margarita, with some help from the rest of the family. It was build 3 years ago and has been furnished and decorated with an impeccable modern taste. Even small details, like the decor on the coffee tables by the pool, did make a difference. Such a pity they don't officially serve drinks by the pool - but you can either bring your own or expect some treat from Margarita! Her daughter's "spoon sweets" are top notch.

As for the area of Agia Anna, there is not much to be said. The beach is actually the continuation of the Agios Prokopios beach, a sandy beach with crystal clear waters even at its busiest part. A couple of nice cafes also serve the rented umbrellas.

And like all the west coast of the island, the sunset is an unforgettable experience, every day.

What is also convenient is the proximity of Agia Anna to the main Naxos town, Chora. You can spend the day at the beach - or at any other beach, Plaka is at walking distance - and the night by the port or the old town in Chora. Bus connection is really frequent and if you are a more athletic type, you can always ride the 4 km to the town (and spare the quest for a parking place at the free municipality parking).
